Don’t let anyone tell you Richmond isn’t a sports town. Sure, we’re not part of the NFL. Sure, during the World Series people may all be rooting for different players. Sure, some Richmonders (me) may not even be able to name an NHL team.
But not a sports town? That’s absurd.
Let’s start with baseball. Our favorite Double-A team, the Flying Squirrels, is a summertime staple around here. You don’t have to be an avid baseball supporter to enjoy these games (in fact…many people aren’t) (me). As long as you like mid-inning entertainment, very reasonably-priced craft beer, and the occasional firework, this is a great way to spend an evening.
Now let’s talk about soccer. The Richmond Kickers are another summertime favorite, with lively crowds, giveaways, events, and, yup, craft beer. Then for something a little different (but still a sport!) there’s Arena Racing. If fast racing cars are your thing, this could be a great time. If fast racing cars aren’t your thing…well, as with many sporting events, the actual sport is really only part of the excitement.
And although Richmond doesn’t have an official football team, we are home to the Redskins Training Camp. All summer, fans can watch the Redskins run, fumble, practice drills, and sit in hot tubs.
Then of course we have multiple colleges, Virginia Commonwealth University, the University of Richmond, Virginia Union University, Virginia State University, and Randolph Macon College. Each school has their own slew of sports, including soccer, lacrosse, and basketball.
In fact, the VCU Rams basketball team once made it to the Final Four during March Madness…let’s just say they’ve never had so many new fans (me).
So, sure, you may have to look a little harder to find sports in this town. But don’t give up, they’re all here.
